Individual Therapy
Since no two children are the same, therapy is tailored to meet the needs of each individual child based on age, interests, family situation, and treatment needs. I strive to provide a safe, and comfortable therapeutic environment in which children can openly express their feelings and learn ways to cope better.
Since many children often have difficulty talking about their issues, I use engaging activities such as therapeutic games, art, and play. Therapy is based on a variety of models including play therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT).
The role of the parents/caregiver is crucial in therapy. Parents will be encouraged to provide regular updates, meet to receive feedback and review objectives/goals. In addition, parents may be requested to support their child’s progress by implementing and practicing interventions at home.
Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) Program
SPACE is a parent-based treatment program for childhood and adolescent anxiety. The program was developed through the Yale Child Study Center and treats issues such as separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, fears/phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Parents/Caregivers who participate in SPACE will learn skills and tools to help their child overcome anxiety, OCD or related problems. The treatment focuses on changes that parents can make to their own behaviour, they do not need to make their child change. The two main changes that parents learn to make in SPACE treatment are to respond more supportively to their anxious child and to reduce the accommodations they have been making to the child’s symptoms.
Family Therapy
I also work with children in family therapy. This can be an extremely effective intervention for helping families coping with changes and transitions. Within the context of family therapy sessions, family members learn to understand and cope better with the presenting emotional, behavioural, or social issues. In family therapy, various interventions including talk, play, or behavioural strategies may be used to promote encouragement, nurturing, understanding, and changes.
Consultations
Parenting is often difficult and stressful. Parent consultations can offer appropriate parenting skills based on the needs of the parent/caregiver and child. In addition, learning to respond to your child’s feelings and expressing confidence in your child’s ability to cope can reduce parental stress and create a more positive home environment.
